Devlog #32: Void and Snow

Been a pretty decent week, steadily working through the goals I set last week, but also did a bunch of other stuff that came to mind.

Two week goals-

-Xbox/PS controller support: Done! (but still needs proper playtesting)
-Yusuke in party: No progress
-Ayumu/Momo/Wesley POWS: Momo done, Wesley in progress
-North Area: Did a bunch of sprites, and planned and mapped out the main area
-Add audio: Made some progress!

Pow animations-

I’ve always planned to add some flashy animations when returning from a POW minigame and this week I finally got a round to starting them. The idea first started from my love of the Persona 5 all out attacks, and their animated scenes that I never got tired of. You’ll see these animations a bit more often so I’m keeping them short and simple- Here’s the first rough drafts for Rina and Ayumu’s which I plan to polish up and add to the demo:

Times like these I wish I had money to pay a professional to smash it out in an hour instead of me inevitably spending a whole day on each. Gonna take some effort to make them look good but hopefully it's worth it in the end. I’m also gonna make a proper trailer soon and these will be great for a section in that.

-------------------------------------------

Void effect-

Another addition that’s been a long time coming, I finally figured out how to give the void the visual effect that I wanted from the beginning. Now instead of a static image, the void can cover the surface area of whatever shape I draw and the pattern will line up with the camera placement for an other-worldly effect.

Also now it works in a way that I can add easily add “voided” objects that can be stabilised. So you'll still need to build a bridge over the large ones as was in the demo, but voided objects and smaller void holes could be sealed up completely revealing new objects, paths, ghosts, etc

-------------------------------------------------

Snow area-

I started working on sprites and mapping out the main northern area which is a big open area covered with snow. I’ll avoid spoiling the full area, but here’s a little mockup test area I did-

Just a simple snowflake effect I drew, plus the snow effect that changes based on how deep the snow is. Pretty basic stuff but I like how it turned out.

--------------------------------

I'm progressing at a steady pace, and trying to stay consistent. My next major goal (adding the ending of the game) is quite a ways off still so I need to treat it like a marathon instead of a sprint. But most immediately important- I've gotta get as much done as possible before TotK!
Thanks for reading!
