Devlog #21- Codex and Dark Places


2 weeks ago I set myself a goal to finish the next area of the game by today. And as of today, I have set up all the rooms for the area (although half of them are entirely unfurnished) and the main cut-scenes up until you recruit the area's party member are complete.
...But I definitely can't say I've finished it.

The goal was purposely gigantic but too vague to really get a good grasp of how well I went. Overall I’m definitely behind where I had hoped to be, but I’ve made a good chunk of progress and it’s all coming along nicely so I'm not ready to cut any planned content or rethink the way I'm doing things -just yet.

Next Area Teaser

I’m gonna be showing less now that we’re in spoiler territory but here’s another quick teaser for the next area→


The area is dark until you light up the rooms so all the sprites including party member sprite-sheets now have dark versions. I'll leave it a mystery what this room's actually for, but you could probably make a decent guess from this image alone.

I think it's going to be a fun area, and it's turning out to be a lot like a traditional videogame dungeon with switches and doors. I've spent a lot of time on pixel art for this area, and there's loads more to go, so hopefully it pays off in the end.

Codex and Demo Update

I deviated from working on the next area for a few days over the last two weeks to work on an update for the demo! You can read the full change-log here and give the demo a go while you’re there if you haven't already!

The biggest addition to the demo is the Codex menu which is the last in-game menu I needed to add to the game. It shows all the ghosts that are possible to encounter as silhouettes, and when you have beaten them you’ll be able to see their general info.

Weekly Goal

Going forward I’m going to set my self weekly goals in these devlogs. This first one is mostly the same as my previous goal, but written more precisely:

-Next area Boss battle
-All major cutscenes up until Boss battle
-Other areas furnished (at the very least with functional placeholder art)
-Ability to change party members at basecamp

I often get distracted and do something not on my immediate to-do list so I expect there may be more done by next week, but I'll be happy as long as everything here is done.

From now on, devlogs will be more of a quick check-in like this one with some teasers and general updates. If I add something interesting I want to talk about then I'll do a deep-dive on it, but it looks like it’ll mostly be cut-scenes and pixel art for the foreseeable future.
